Brawl of America
Six Elements hosts the yearly Brawl of America stage combat workshop. The Brawl of America Stage Combat Workshop is an opportunity to train in the art of performing violence on stage and screen that is both safe and dramatically effective. Our instructors are leaders in the industry with national renown. We offer a variety of classes that explore the diverse applications of choreographed violence within the contexts of dramatic storytelling. For more information, go to http://brawlofamerica.weebly.com.
Other Training Opportunities
In addition to Brawl of America, there are several other local training opportunities in the Twin Cities. If you are looking to get a feel for stage combat or are looking for a deeper dive into a specific weapon, consider checking out the Facebook group Minnesota Stage Combat Connection at https://www.facebook.com/groups/MNSCOG/ for posted training opportunities.
The Six Elements Scholarship Fund
We at Six Elements Theatre have a deeply-held belief that following responsible practices during the creative process helps everyone make better art. This is why we adopted the Chicago Theatre Standards, and have been the regional leader in training opportunities for both stage combat and theatrical intimacy. We recognize that having responsibly-trained individuals helping shape moments of intensity onstage, whether violent or intimate, protects the physical and emotional safety of the creators as well as the audience so we can focus on telling compelling stories. We also recognize that this training has value and associated costs, which can be a barrier for access to many people. To that end, we are proud to announce the Currently Untitled Six Elements Theatre Stage Combat and Intimacy Scholarship Fund. (we’re working on it)
We are currently taking applications for individuals seeking financial assistance to take part in a training opportunity in the fields of stage combat or theatrical intimacy during the 2020 calendar year. This, our inaugural year, we have $400 in scholarships available. Our hope and goal is to expand these offerings year-to-year as the fund grows.
Interested applicants are invited to send a letter of intent to SixElementsBoard@gmail.com with “Scholarship Application - (Your Name)” as the subject line. In the letter, please be sure to include:
--What opportunity you intend to use the funds for (a regional workshop, a longform course, etc) including date(s) and location
--The full posted cost of said training (including estimated travel expenses)
--Your personal training goals (what you’re hoping to do with what you learn, and how this assistance will help you achieve it)
--In addition, please articulate the circumstances impacting your financial need and how this scholarship will provide towards that need
Applications will be accepted until 11:59PM Tuesday, December 31, with recipients being announced within a week.
Six Elements is committed to addressing systemic issues of access when it comes to opportunities like these: as such, those people belonging to underrepresented demographics are strongly encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to Minnesota residents and/or those applicants seeking funds for training within MN.
