The best sport to never exist is back!
Six Elements Theatre Company is proud to present Human Combat Chess 2017! Returning for the 6th year in a row, Human Combat Chess 2017 presents the Celts and the Legion as they compete for 2017’s Midwest Combat Chess League Championship! The stakes have never been higher as the teams #AssumeTheBoard in the best two out of three format shown in last year’s All-Star game!
Human Combat Chess is a recurring show featuring different matches in a fictional sports league playing the sport of Human Combat Chess. Each team fields 16 players of all shapes and sizes that are assigned positions identical to those in the classic game of Chess, who are then ordered to move by their respective Kings. The similarities to Chess begin to unravel when a player moves into a piece occupied by another, as they now fight over the square! This choreographed fight can end with either piece as the victor, holding the square.
Human Combat Chess combines the drama of theatre with the edge of your seat thrill of sports, and there’s something for everyone. The event is family friendly. If you would take your kids to a hockey game, you should bring them along to Human Combat Chess!

To pull off more than 30 fights with almost as many fighters, we’ve assembled the best team of fight directors in the Twin Cities area. While some of our actors are taking the board for their first time, we give them ample rehearsal time to make sure each fight is a unique, exciting experience for the audience. This gives the audience the adrenaline rush of MMA with the reassurance that the fighters will come out of it safely.
With action both onstage and off, Six Elements Theatre stimulates thought, inspires creativity, and cultivates our community through high-intensity theatre and excellent craftsmanship.
